Jazz Apple Deliver 1-2 punch: Tour de White Rock, BC Canada

Dotsie Bausch Hill Climb winner - image by Judy Smythe

Dotsie Bausch has done a lot of different kinds of racing over an 11-year cycling career that includes a pair of US National Championships on the track.

But the 36-year-old from Jazz Apple Cycling had never raced anything like the Hillclimb at the 30th annual Tour de White Rock.

Not that the new look fazed her at all.

Bausch blew everyone away her first time up the leg melting, lung burning 700-meter ascent from White Rock beach to the top Buena Vista Avenue, finishing in three minutes and 2.18 seconds -- more than 12 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Her reward was a second trip up the 16 per cent grade climb, as the top-five riders went head to head to decide the podium. And again Bausch finished well ahead of everyone.

“What a unique environment,” Bausch said. “You would never do this anywhere else. I mean, go again? But what a cool thing to do -- really painful, but cool. From the very start that crowd took me all the way to the top. It was so inspiring. I felt like I was at the big Liberty Classic in Philly. That’s how loud these people were.”

Jazz Apple’s Marina Duvnjak, a 13-year pro from New Zealand who won the Tour de Delta Road Race on Sunday, finished a distant second.

“It makes you sick trying to follow her,” Duvnjak said of her teammate, shaking her head when told Bausch never got out of the saddle.

Like Bausch, Duvnjak said she’d never done a race like the Hillclimb.

“That is just cruel,” said Duvnjak. “But I do sort of like it because you really do find out just exactly how hard you can push yourself.”

Heather Kay (ERTC/Revolution) of Sherwood Park, Alberta finished third, finally making the podium after finishing fifth her first two attempts –- the first time because she didn’t get called to the start line for the head-to-head race two years ago, and the second after cramping last year.

“This year I was on my rollers and they called the top-5 and I wasn’t in the top five so I was on my rollers kind of cursing because my husband said if I was top-5 I would get to drink tonight, have a beer,” she said with a smile. “And then all of a sudden the race was going to start and they called my number and I carried a whole water bottle up. It’s hard, especially with no warning. I just went as hard as I could both tines.”

Gillian Carleton of Kelowna’s Total Restoration Cycling finished fourth, while Amy Herlinveaux of Vancouver’s Trek Red Truck team was fifth in head-to-head racing after posting the second-fastest time originally. None could catch Bausch, who said her pursuit experience paid off.

“I’m pretty much retired and just mentoring this team but this is probably the one thing I can do really well without giving it much training,” said Bausch. “It’s just knowing your body and knowing exactly what you can do, when you can do it, how long you can do, what stretch you need to stand or sit, what energy you are using through the ride, what to do before. It’s kind of like racing the track, the pursuit, except uphill.”

Not that she was sure she’d enough left for the second time up.

“I had no idea,” Bausch said. “I thought I was going to die the first time, but you’re pretty sure everyone else feels the same because they had to do it too.”

Jazz Apple Sweep Tour de Delta Podium, BC Canada
Today's final road stage of Tour de Delta was conveniently scooped up by Marina Duvnjak following a day of blinding team synergy. There was plenty of excitement during the 88km circuit race with Malindi Maclean convincingly collecting the sprinters jersey by claiming six of eight sprints, while Marina methodically took an unassailable control of the Queen of the Mountains competition.
Race leader, Lauren Ellis and second placed, Dotsie Bausch continued to exude dominance; their presence was consistently felt in every threatening move on the windswept circuits. In the final 2km, Marina rocketed away for a stunning solo victory while Steph Roorda blitzed around Malindi's leadout to finish second. Steph's second place in the stage garnered her valuable time bonus seconds that moved her into third place overall on GC. Dotsie finished third in the sprint today, which landed Jazz Apple first, second and third in the stage as well as in the overall with Lauren crowned as the overall Tour de Delta winner. Lauren also won the best young rider (U25) jersey and the Jazz Apple team clinched the overall teams title.

After four days repsite here in Vancouver BC, the team will once again be in action in the Tour de Whiterock.

Jazz Apple Take Control of Tour de Delta, BC Canada
Dotsie and Lauren go clear at Tour de Delta crit
After a steady start in yesterday's tour de Delta (BC, Canada) prologue, Jazz Apple stole the top three steps on the podium in this evening's criterium event, with Lauren Ellis claiming first, Dotsie Bausch second and Steph Roorda third!
Malindi Maclean snagged 90% of the early cash prizes before Marina began launching mid way into the race. Malindi and Marina's swift moves worked to soften the field before Lauren and Dotsie began to launch Steph hoping to rocket her to a hometown victory. Lauren successfully managed to launch Steph on a multi-lap breakaway but a furious chase ensued and Steph was caught with four to go.  Fortunately Lauren and Dotsie  streaked by right on the catch, and stole away with the race. In the gallop, Marina and Malindi steered Steph into the last corner in perfect position who then delivered a tremendous sprint for third. Marina finished 5th and Malindi 6th in an excellent effort.

Currently Lauren holds the overall leaders jersey as well as the best young rider with one final stage tomorrow.

Marina Wins, Lauren 3rd Central Coast Classic Day Two: Downtown San Louis Obispo CA USA
Jazz Apple Podium San Luis Obispo CaliforniaMarina Duvnjak collected a stunning victory in today's hugely popular downtown San Luis Obispo criterium. Marina's win was a thrilling ending to a three woman breakaway, which dessimated on the final two laps by a killer attack in the wind by perrenial athlete, Pam Schuster. Marina managed to bridge to Pam only 200m from the line, and then in a FUJI flash, jumped straight past to win in front of a hugely excited crowd.

Steph Roorda had an impressively spirited outing covering all the decisive moves while Lauren unpacked her sprinter's legs to collect the major cash primes. After several successive attacks with an active race by Team La Grange, Marina managed to break the field with Pam Schuster and a 'La Grange' bridging across. On the last lap, the remaining field managed to swallow the lone La Grange rider and Lauren unleashed her galloping legs to win the bunch kick for third.
Malindi kicked to finish 5th, which placed three of the Jazz Apple team in the top five.

The team have a few days at 'home' with our wonderful hosts, the Linders and the Duffy's before heading up to Vancouver for BC Superweek, June 10-19. Thank you to you all for your tremendous support.

An ultra thin but to the point history.

Four years ago, six bright young kiwis hoisted the Jazz Apple flag aiming to etch their mark on the international cycling scene.  With a good dose of kiwi ingenuity and an equal measure of tenacity, they inspired the development of the Jazz Apple team. And it is that spirit that still drives us today, as well as of course, the support and enthusiasm of the Jazz Apple growers in New Zealand and all over the world.
